HISTORY OF THE "SPRING THEATRE"

In the summer of 1977, a small truck full of scenery and costumes of the Theatro tis Anoixis (Spring Theatre) left Athens, to take part in the 3d Theatrical Festival of Ithaki. In the island of Ulysses, the new troupe performed “1821, The Revolution, Karagioz and the Highhats”, which won 5 prices and gave us the joy and the courage to begin a difficult but also very exciting journey.

During all these years, our repertoire has moved on many different directions from performances based on actors’ improvisations (1821, The Revolution, Karagioz and the Highhats, Greece is Great, Lunimagico, Horodion, a chorus conservatory) to classic plays (The cherry Orchard, Woyzzeck, Mina) and from contemporary plays (The Slaves, The power of the habi, Les parents terribles, The goat, Sofia Laskaridou-a life’s journey) to ancient tragedies (Electra, Troyan women, Andromache, Atreides, Bachae) and performances which are based on texts’ compositions (Under the Paradise, Love and murder).

Many difficulties, many experiences, but always the exciting journey in the world of theatre. We could refer to some important moments of this journey. For example our tour in many different greek locations, the recognition of our work from the international audience through the ancient tragedies, our theatre in Kerameikos, our meetings with theatre companies from abroad. But most of all, our collaboration with greek and foreigner actors, writers, musicians, set designers, who helped the Spring Theatre to exist and to continue its way!
